My LDH Scissors (A Review)

This blog post is lonngggg overdue. I have literally had my first pair of LDH scissors for nearly two years, and I have yet to write anything about them here, on my blog. Sure, I have touted them all over my IG, but I haven't be able to put into words how much I love this brand of scissors and all the reasons why.

Prior to being introduced to LDH, I had really only had exposure to a few scissor brands, namely Gingher. I think almost everyone who sews knows or has heard of Gingher -- they have been around for forever! In fact, my first sewing scissors were Ginghers, and I believe they had been passed down to me from other family members who used to sew.

However, I never fully loved my Ginghers. For me, they always felt incredibly heavy in my hands and the cuts from mine were never quite what I had hoped for. At first, I assumed it was because I was using hand-me-downs for most of my sewing career. But upon purchasing some brand new shears, I found that this was just the case with this particular brand. At least for me.

I have also played around with some other brands including Ernest Wright and Kai. I am not sure if I got a lemon with my Ernest Wright shears, but they were really sticky and squeaked and were difficult to handle almost immediately out the gate. I think my first line of cutting was like butter, but everything else after that was just kinda... bleh.

I will say that Kai's are a beautiful scissor to work with. They are incredibly lightweight and easy to handle and they produce a wonderful cut. But for me, I am not a huge fan of their overall look. This is 100% vanity speaking, but I really do value a sexy scissor!

Which is why I wanted to write an entire post on my LDH Collection! Not only do I believe in this brand of scissors because of how incredibly sharp and consistent they are, but also because... well, their scissors are just really beautiful, too! Note: All of these items have been gifted to me over the years by LDH, but this is no way alters my below opinions of them. 

Midnight Edition Fabric Shears (9" + 10")

The first pair of scissors I ever got from LDH were the 10" Midnight Edition Fabric Shears. Oh. My. Gosh! I loved them so much, right out the gate.

For a 10" scissor, these are incredibly light, even for my somewhat weaker wrists (I'm working on improving their strength through lots of planks!). I remember clearly opening up these scissors in their beautifully packaged box in NOLA and trying them out on a project for the first time. I remember it so clearly because my cousin, @Twayler, recorded my first time reaction of it!

These scissors literally went beyond any expectation I could have had for a pair of scissors at the time. I honestly had never owned anything so sexy, easy to handle, sharp, or in a word... perfect. It felt like I was cutting butter the first time I used them. And honestly, two years later, after having used them quite often and not yet sharpening them (I know! I am seriously overdue to have them sharpened as I can hear them squeaking quite a bit now), they STILL cut like butter! It kind of blows my mind!

It wasn't until earlier this year that I received the generous gift of the 9" Midnight Edition Shears, engraved with Untitled Thoughts written on one side.

I wasn't expecting such a lovely gift from Ursula and Roy (the amazing owners behind LDH) as I had just gotten back from working with them at a quilting show in Georgia, and quarantine for the pandemic had just started. But there they were. This beautiful pair of scissors wrapped up in the same eco-friendly packaging waiting for me to cut in to my first project.

I have actually exclusively switched to using only these two shears for all of my sewing projects because they have been such a dream to work with and cut through so many materials (silk, denim, voile, french terry, and canvas to name a few- all without any snagging!). And Ursula kindly gave me a tutorial on how to clean and oil my scissors when we worked together in March which has helped a TON in my sewing practice!

To say I am a bit obsessed with these two shears might be a bit of an understatement.... but I have good reason to be! The only thing I will say is you want to be suppperrr careful when using these. I have cut the tips of my fingers a number of times with the tips of these scissors because they are just so sharp all the way to the tippy-tip. Whoops!

Midnight Edition Pinking Shears

I can't remember when I was gifted these shears, but I do remember that it was ironic because I had recently purchased a pair of Gingher pinking shears that I was super disappointed by. After having only a very old, very vintage pair of pinking shears, I had decided to treat myself to a brand spanking new pair, hoping that they would be easier to handle (i.e. not so dang challenging to open and close) and would leave my projects with a beautifully clean line on the inside.

I received neither from my new Ginghers. *Sigh*

So when the LDH pair came in, I was equal parts excited and hesitant. Would these work really well or were all pinking shears terrible? Would I ever get that nice, clean, beautiful zig-zag edge? Would I be able to cut through silk without it snagging or denim without having to give my arm a break every few snips?

I honestly don't know why I ever doubted that all my pinking shears dreams would come true. After the first test, I was hooked! I even did a side by side comparison of the ease in which I could cut my project at the time with these scissors in comparison to the Ginghers. Honestly, I will forever give these pinking shears a 12/10 to anyone and everyone who might ever need a new pair because they are that stinking brilliant.

Midnight Edition Thread Snip

I'll admit, I am not a huge fan of thread snips in general. I totally understand their purpose, but generally, if I am working at my machine and I have the choice between my shears and a pair of thread snips, I will opt for the shears every time. When it comes to hand sewing, though, that is an entirely different beast.

I have a few snips for various hand sewing projects. I have the ones I use for embroidery and the ones I use for snipping threads I find still hanging from my newly finished projects. They are lightweight and easy to carry around. They are also super easy to lose, which I happen to do often.

What I love about these particular snips -- aside from the fact that they round out my Midnight Edition Collection -- is how substantial they are. I have found that I have trouble losing these snips in my chaotic sewing room, which is a plus! They really stand out among all the fabrics I have in my sewing space.

Plussss, I really enjoy this cool trick that Ursula and Roy shared with me on how to hold the snips in my hands. It makes it so I can keep them in my hands while doing other things without fear of poking holes in my projects (or myself!), while also remaining ultra comfortable.

Basically, you put the ring portion on your ring finger and use your thumb to snip, snip, snip away! If you have a pair, I suggest trying this out. It blew my mind when I saw it!

Midnight Edition Rotary Cutter

Alright, so this is probably the crème de la crème of all rotary cutters ever. Forget about the actual rotary holder itself. It's the blades that are truly magical.

For the longest longest time, I honestly thought that rotary blades just wore out super freaking fast. Like, two-projects-and-you're-done kind of fast. That's what I kept finding with my Olfa blades at least. I would get them out the box, they would cut beautifully for a project or two and then WHAM! Out of nowhere, I would hit snag after snag after snag in my fabric. It was truly frustrating.

It wasn't until the quilting show that I saw just how sharp these LDH blades were. Honestly, I was a bit afraid of cutting myself by mistake or something with them! But after two days of continuous use, they seemed to remain just as sharp as when we brought them out to the demo table. I even took a video of myself cutting through stacks and stacks of fabrics with one hand with total ease. I can't remember how many layers I had cut through, but it had to have been at least 15 layers of quilting cotton, maybe more? And then switching to leather where they cut the sharpest, cleanest line you ever did see.

Needless to say, no one will ever convince me that these blades aren't the best blades ever. And what I love most about the blades is that they fit well into both the Olfa and Fiskars handheld device. So, if you already happen to have one of those, all you have to do is replace the blades and you'll be smooth sailing! Though, I will admit I enjoy the LDH handheld device as well. It's got a nice grip to it and is angled in a way that naturally flows with my wrist. But that's just a personal preference.

Foldable Snips

These snips JUST became available on the LDH site - woohoo! I just find these scissors to be so freaking cute and kinda mind blowing in their construction. Like, how did they come to be? And who figured out how to get them to fold in on themselves in such a cool way?

Basically, these are just a pair of small snips that have the ability to fold up and into themselves.

I typically wear these snips around my neck on a piece of long bias tape while I am sewing so that I can easily access them to snip threads or little bits and bobs. Because they fold up, I am never afraid of accidentally stabbing myself. Plus, they look like a beautiful piece of jewelry that I happen to wear in my capacity as a sewist. It makes me feel super important, even if all I am doing is sewing together dozens of napkins! Aren't they super fun?

Squishy Snips

Ursula and Roy were so kind and sent me a pair of their new squishable snips as a wedding gift!

I haven't had a chance to use them, but they happen to by my favorite shade of blue. I'll be honest, I have no idea why these snips handles are squishy (I'll have to look it up sometime soon!), but I kind of love this feature. It's really fun to just... squish them, haha. That probably sounds weird but it's true! I can't wait to use these on my next project!

There you have it! My entire collection of LDH Scissors along with all the reasons I am obsessed with this brand. and I don't use that word lightly, either. There are very few brands that I am just gaga in love with, but LDH has stolen my heart. Partly because the owners are incredible humans, partly because the products are so gorgeous, but mainly because their scissors really work like they say they are and they possess some sort of magical properties that I only hope  you are able to see for yourself!
